Elena Kovardakova. Cinema as a Space for Public Diplomacy

Public diplomacy begins with the desire to listen to a person, understand their destiny, and tell their story in a way that is comprehensible to people in another country and another culture. It is an opportunity to speak to the world in the language of documentary cinema and, through the screen, create a space for encounter, understanding, and friendship.

The camera becomes a unique bridge between people. Through the story of one person, one can tell about an era; through the fate of one family—about an entire country; through the memory of one people—find what is close and understandable to others.

This is exactly why she makes films about historical memory, about the war and Victory, about people who have preserved the memory of the past, the culture, and the destinies of nations. It is important to her that these stories are heard and become a catalyst for conversation.

Cinema is capable of doing what is sometimes difficult to achieve with official words: uniting people through emotion, memory, and empathy.

The "Unity of the Victors" Project

The documentary project "Unity of the Victors" is a multi-part film about the feat of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War, covering various periods of that time. It is a study of shared historical memory, based on a simple yet fundamentally important premise: the Victory was one for all. It was won by representatives of all republics of the Soviet Union, all nationalities, professions, and generations. They were united by one Motherland, one shared tragedy, and one goal—to defeat fascism.

Currently, the first short pilot episode of the project has been created—"Mother of the Seventeen Saved."

We are the descendants of the victors. And our task in the challenging conditions of the present time is to unite.

Professional Activities

Elena Kovardakova is a Kazakhstani documentary filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter, and the author of over 60 documentary films. A significant portion of her work is dedicated to the events of the Great Patriotic War, the fates of the film participants, and lesser-known pages of history. She is a participant and laureate of numerous international film festivals. Over her 20-year career, she has received around 30 diplomas, prizes, medals, and awards. A number of letters of appreciation testify to her significant contribution to the development of cinematic arts and cultural projects.

Among Elena Kovardakova's directorial projects are films such as "Partisans," "Internationalists" (dedicated to the internationalist soldiers who fought in the Afghan War), and "Path to Victory," where the veterans' stories in the film are the living speech of eyewitnesses, preserving details inaccessible to dry archives.

A special role in her work is occupied by the project dedicated to preserving historical memory and countering the falsification of history, "Heroes of the Great Power," which includes several films: "General Panfilov," "Panfilov's Men," "In the Whirlwind of Life," "Legacy of Heroes," and "Let Us Remember Everyone by Name." The author actively collaborated with the international memorial campaign "Candle of Memory," visited sites of Military Glory, Moscow, and Volokolamsk. Together with her film crew, she visited many regions of the Moscow Oblast, working in museums and archives.

The large-scale television project "Kazakhstan: Heroes of the Great Patriotic War" is a unique documentary encyclopedia dedicated to the feats of Kazakhstanis during the Great Patriotic War. The series consists of 24 episodes and covers the fates of 92 Heroes of the Soviet Union.

The extensive 3-part documentary project "The Last Frontier" is dedicated to lesser-known facts from the front lines and the home front.

Educational Initiatives

Elena Kovardakova is the author and organizer of educational initiatives aimed at fostering civic responsibility, patriotism, and respect for historical memory among the youth. The filmmaker not only makes films but also actively participates in patriotic education, conducting meetings and "lessons of courage" in schools, colleges, and other educational institutions. These classes differ from traditional lectures in that they are built around documentary films created with her participation or under her direction. The use of original films allows not just to convey facts, but to create an effect of presence, enabling students to perceive the material more deeply.

Civic Engagement

Elena Kovardakova is one of those citizens of Kazakhstan for whom participation in the public life of the country is an important part of personal responsibility. She demonstrates an active civic stance by taking part in various public initiatives and memorial events.

A special place in her activities is occupied by her participation in organizing the civil procession "Immortal Regiment" ("Batirlarga Tagzym" in Kazakhstan)—an annual event dedicated to preserving the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War.

What is Leadership?

Leadership is, first and foremost, responsibility. Responsibility for the idea a person has chosen and for the people who trust them.

In the profession of a film director, leadership is especially important. A director must see the story before others, feel its significance, find people who will help bring the vision to life, and take responsibility for how the audience will ultimately see the film.

A true leader does not simply lead the way. They create a space where others can also express themselves and make their mark.

And in public diplomacy, leadership for Elena Kovardakova is the ability to connect people. To find common ground between different cultures, maintain dialogue, propose ideas, and turn meetings into real projects.

And perhaps most importantly, leadership begins with an inner understanding: if you want to change something around you, you must start with your own actions.
