Alnadjem Azzam Adnan

Public Diplomacy as the Art of Reconciliation and Cross-Cultural Dialogue

For Alnadjem Azzam Adnan, a French writer of Syrian origin, former governor of the Suwayda region, and Knight of the French National Order of Merit, the path to public diplomacy began with personal courage, patience, and a deep-seated belief that nations are not natural enemies. His entire professional journey is permeated by a single, overarching theme: the pursuit of consensus where discord reigns.

Over the past fifteen years, particularly amidst the Syrian conflict, Adnan has dedicated himself to reconciling warring tribes, families, and factions. This unique experience taught him a fundamental truth: hostility is born from fear, prejudice, and a lack of dialogue, and it can only be overcome through direct, human-to-human connection.

"Public Diplomacy in the Service of Dialogue Between Peoples"

Adnan’s core initiative is rooted in the conviction that true diplomacy belongs to citizens, not just governments. It is forged in personal encounters, grassroots associations, and civic initiatives.

Serving as an advisor in the reconciliation department (La Réconciliation) of the Paris Labor Court, Adnan honed his mastery of resolving disputes before they escalate into protracted legal battles. He is firmly convinced that true justice often lies not in delivering a verdict, but in restoring human bonds and reaching a genuine consensus. His goal is to create spaces for dialogue where people can cultivate critical thinking, resist information manipulation, and learn to understand one another before passing judgment.

A Journey on Horseback: From Damascus to Moscow

To understand the roots of human conflict, Adnan chose the oldest and most authentic way of discovering the world: travel. He spent four years in the saddle, traversing the Americas, Western Europe, and the Arab world on horseback. Later, he embarked on an epic 300-day journey from Syria through Jordan, Iraq, and Iran, all the way to Moscow, passing through Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, Ossetia, Rostov, Voronezh, and Tula.

These expeditions, chronicled in his books "When the Arab Wakes Up", "Damascus–Moscow on Horseback", and "The French Seen by an Arab", led to his most profound discovery: when people meet face-to-face, they uncover shared aspirations—to live in peace, secure a future for their children, and preserve their dignity. This experience fortified his belief in a genuine partnership between the free societies of the Arab world and Europe.

Tangible Results: From Tribal Reconciliation to International Recognition

Adnan’s efforts have yielded concrete, measurable results under the most challenging conditions. He successfully orchestrated three reconciliation processes among rival tribes in Syria’s conflict zones, preventing further localized bloodshed. His contribution to strengthening cross-cultural ties and the art of reconciliation has been recognized with high state honors, including being named a Knight of the French National Order of Merit. His written works (some of which he self-published independently) have served as a vital bridge for both Arab and European audiences, calling for a renewed focus on education, science, culture, and the development of an independent civilizational project.

Philosophy of Leadership: Patience, Culture, and Historical Optimism

For Alnadjem Adnan, the core principles of leadership are patience, culture, and truth. He identifies as an intellectual and an Arab patriot, unaffiliated with any political or military faction, striving to make an impact primarily through the written word, his books, and personal encounters.

His worldview is anchored in a profound historical optimism. By studying history, he observes that civilizations and empires rise and fall, and attempts to cement permanent dominance are ultimately temporary. Therefore, he believes it is necessary to look "one level below the leaders"—at ordinary people, who, when meeting face-to-face, are far more likely to discover what unites them. This mindset fuels his unwavering faith in the possibility of reconciliation and a new rapprochement between peoples.
